The development and spread of artificial intelligence (AI) represents one of the major technological innovations of recent decades. Artificial intelligence now spans the most diverse domains, and its proliferation will imply profound changes in the way economies and societies organise themselves. At what point do these changes represent an opportunity and what are the costs that societies will have to bear in the short term to adapt to this shift? What economic policies will be needed to regulate it?
Economic Policy is the only pan-European high-impact policy journal, and the ideal platform for this transformational debate. As its Managing Editors, we think that our profession has important insights to share with society and an important role to play in addressing how to design policy to properly deal with the challenges posed by the changes related to the diffusion of AI.
We are calling for contributions to a Special Issue on “Artificial Intelligence and the Economy“. Successful articles will address the fundamental challenges and aim at high impact in the policy debate. The editors are looking for theoretical and empirical contributions that combine rigorous research with distinct policy messages. This special issue aspires to reflect the full breadth of the effects of Artificial Intelligence and their relevance in the economy in different domains including:
- AI impact on competition
- AI impact on market structure
- AI impact on growth and productivity
- AI impact on inequality
- AI and labour markets
- AI effects on politics, political participation and voting
- AI and the policing and judiciary systems
- AI and technological change, innovation and property rights
- AI and Finance
- AI impact on public health
For this Special Issue, the Managing Editors will be joined by two outstanding Guest Editors, Giacomo Calzolari (EUI) and Emilio Calvano (Tor Vergata University). Successful papers will be invited for presentation at the 79th Economic Policy Panel meeting in April 2024. The deadline for submission of papers via our online submission system (https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ecpol) is 30 September 2023.
