Submission deadline: 30 September 2020

On 11 March 2020 the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 a global pandemic. Around the world, the pandemic is posing severe challenges to health systems, the global and local economy, and to society as a whole. While the consequences of the pandemic are still unclear, more academic research is needed to understand how countries can best prepare to deal with the immediate and longer run impacts of the pandemic, as well as lessons from the current experience that can be used to guide policymakers to better prepare for potential crises in the future.

As Europe’s premier policy journal, Economic Policy is inviting contributions to a Special Issue on “The Economics of COVID-19”. Selected papers will be presented at the Economic Policy Panel meeting on 15-16 April 2021.

We are looking for theoretical and empirical contributions for this Special Issue that combine rigorous research with distinct policy messages. We particularly invite submissions that address the following questions:
– The impact on the local and global economy and different sectors
– The political and economic response and strategy, including the effects of state rescue packages
– The role of central banks, financial markets and international institutions
– The effect of demographic factors, such as age structure on the spread of the pandemic
– The effect of COVID-19 on demographics, such as fertility, mortality and migration
– The impact of the pandemic on the environment and CO2 emissions
– The effects on the education; the impact of home and online schooling; the future of studying abroad
– The interaction between epidemiological and economic factors
– The tradeoff (or lack thereof) between economic and health measures

If you are interested in contributing, please submit a paper by 30 September 2020 using our online submission system (https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ecpol). Papers will be sent to referees and you will receive an editorial decision with detailed comments no later than 6 January 2021. In the positive case, a revised draft of your contribution will be due by 1 March 2021.

In the case of a positive decision, you will be invited to present your paper at the April 2021 Panel Meeting, where it will be discussed by two panellists and by the audience. After the panel, you will have time for a final set of revisions based on the panel discussion, which will be published together with the papers in a special issue of the journal.

Please do forward on this message to other scholars in the field.
