Extended deadline: 30 September 2022

Europe’s premier policy journal, Economic Policy, is inviting contributions to a Special Issue on “Geoeconomics”. Selected papers will be presented at the Economic Policy Panel meeting on the 20 and 21 of April 2023.

Tensions on the international scene have been rising over the last decades, reaching a dramatic point with the Ukrainian war. The idea that economic interdependencies could be an engine for peace has been proved wrong. What will be the medium- and long-run consequences on the organisation of global markets of current international tensions? How will the economy adjust to a new state of high geopolitical uncertainty?

In this Special Issue, we are looking for theoretical and empirical contributions that combine rigorous research with distinct policy messages. We particularly invite submissions that address the following issues:

  • Globalization, interdependence and conflict in history
  • International finance, capital flows, and geopolitics
  • War, migration, and forced displacement
  • International relations and economic governance (e.g., the architecture of markets and agreements)
  • Economic effects, design, and circumvention of trade and financial sanctions
  • Effects of sanctions on regime stability and domestic support
  • Global value chains under the shadow of war (e.g. war-induced disruption and economic vulnerability)
  • The macroeconomic impact of war at the national and international level.
  • The economics of warfare and resource mobilization
  • The political economy of sanctions in implementing countries
  • Energy security, transport networks and control of supply routes

If you are interested in contributing, please submit a paper by 30 September 2022 using our online submission system (https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ecpol). Papers will be sent to referees and you will receive an editorial decision with detailed comments no later than 20 December 2022. In the positive case, a revised draft of your contribution will be due by 20 March 2023.

In the case of a positive decision, you will be invited to present your paper at the April 2023 Panel Meeting, where it will be discussed by two panellists and by the audience. After the panel, you will have time for a final set of revisions based on the panel discussion, which will be published together with the papers in a special issue of the journal.

Please do forward this message to other scholars in the field.
