The invited policy session of the 79th Economic Policy panel meeting featured Daron Acemoglu of MIT presenting new analysis of claims about the supposedly large macroeconomic implications of advances in generative artificial intelligence. Using a task-based approach to assessing AI’s effects on productivity, his study concludes that the impact on GDP is likely to be modest.

The invited policy session of the 78th Economic Policy panel meeting will feature Kenneth Rogoff of Harvard University presenting new evidence of China’s heavy reliance on real estate and infrastructure construction as a central part of its economic growth. The report reveals that the share of these two sectors in China’s GDP far exceeds the levels found in the United States and Europe; only Spain in the run-up to its financial crisis came close.

The opening session of the event featured a review of the evidence from economic research related to the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine by Felipe Valencia Caicedo (Vancouver School of Economics) & Ana Tur-Prats (University of California, Merced).

The Spring 2022 Economic Policy Panel Meeting was held in Paris hosted by Direction générale du Trésor on 7 and 8 April. The papers presented focused on a variety of topics and included selected submissions for the special issue on ‘The Economics of Stereotypes, Attitudes and Discrimination’.
An online panel discussion on Covid, School Closures And Children’s Futures took place on the first day with a presentation by Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln followed by a discussion with Monica Costa-Dias and Andreas Schleicher, moderated by Andrew Jack, Global Education Editor for the Financial Times.
